Boundaries of Compassion

Experiment in Sportkrankenhaus
Dr. S. and Dr. D.

Dr. S and Dr. D.

Invite me

To take German blood

For an experiment

On the nature of emotion

- the patients are lied to -

As usual (what accomplished lie-artists doctors become)

But their devotion to the task

Suddenly stops :

The Big Chief

Immersed in beer

Unbeknownst to me

Has seen me play piano exercises on the table

In the pub

Where patients too saw

My peculiar undisciplined behaviour.

The Chief, still immersed,

Calls Dr.S in alarm :

This cannot continue -

Patients complain,

Dr.S., believing the patients

Complain about the blood

Next morning

Stops all further letting

For fear of losing his license

"Five patients have complained"

Nothing will induce him

To continue -

Dismayed, I ask, who complained about what?

Did you enquire further

No, says Dr.S, I did not wish

To enquire further, it was enough

To be told.

Dr.D, his boss, in turn says - it is your project, boys

Fight for it

It has nothing to do

With me.

And go and see the Chief.

And the Chief, now sober, with beer swilled nose

"Herr Professor, it was all a mistake

I was drunk

I did not know that you are a pianist -

Doing your training so admirably

If I had known that, I would have called you over

And we would have all had a good time

Together

No problem of course about blood

And I am and always have been for studying,

Exercising and cultivating the

Emotions of our stiff

German patients, who need creativity

Who need to have their emotions

Unblocked

But you should have introduced him to me before Dr.S !"

And so we promptly resumed

Taking the blood,

and in four weeks conclude the experiment
