Boundaries of Compassion

Visit to a Murderer's Home

Mention not his murderous act

Of years ago

That would not be polite

Polite ?

Are you mad

To think of politeness here

Still, it would not be

Polite or appropriate,

Or civil,

Or what?

No word to

Describe what it would not be

Yet on the walls everywhere

There are mementos

Newspaper clippings:

Forgetting is not the answer

Mention not

What cannot be forgotten

It is there

Burning in the mind

A pain,

Suppress the pain

With another layer

Of pain

Suppress that pain -

With another new layer of pain

Suppress that pain -

Another layer -

How shall this

ever stop?

Can it stop?

The pain

must come out

Smoke erupts

It cannot be not mentioned

Say it then aloud, man

But now, face the devastation

Of your murderous friend

Having mentioned

It

His face says

You cannot be the friend

Of a murderer

If you are, that makes you

An accomplice

Not a friend

And in my visit I search

How to be a friend

And not to be an accomplice

Kindness is not enough

Too blind, too bland

What is ?

Say then

"We are all potential murderers"

Ha ha

It is not true

Not true

not consolation,

not consecration,

There is a big

Difference

Between potential murder

And murder

Murder has consequence

That is the Law

Not man made

- Really, really not.

What then?

What if ....

What if I could

Really love,

Love the murderer

Without forgetting,

Show him

The pain

But make that love

Surround the pain

Surround the pain

With love

With love

I would not be an accomplice

But then I would be more

Than a friend

Can I single out

My murderer friend

In this way

from all my other friends?

I cannot.

Not properly. If I love him

I must love all

This leaves me

Where I am

In the murderer's home

In pain, choked in smoke

And a glimmer, a glimmer

Of blind, blind, always blind hope,
