Boundaries of Compassion

Incomprehensible

In Köln

I meet a fine cultured and

wealthy family

who run the musical world

and donate museums to the

beleaguered city.

He, a little older than me,

honest and lovable

shows me around

the old Roman steps and mosaic,

the medieval church

"and here when I was a youngster

I waved to Hitler

who was standing up there

coming out for an occasional meaningless gesture

And we all yelled in this square

'Wir wollen unseren Fuhrer - '

"How we could be taken in like this "

he says deeply perplexed and disturbed

"How we could be taken in like this,

- it is incomprehensible !"
